A Viennese Soirée

The New London Opera Group is delighted to announce its annual Spring Concert at Louth Playgoers' Riverhead Theatre on Saturday, 26th February 2005.

Following the huge success of the concert of Gilbert and Sullivan favourites, Here's a how-de-do! in 2004, the group will bring an evening of Viennese operetta to Louth Playgoers. The concert, entitled A Viennese Soirée is a celebration of the ever-popular operettas of Strauss and Léhar, combined with excerpts from less well-known works by Kálmán, Millöcker, Zeller and Heuberger.

These operettas conjure up the glamour and romance of a bygone age and have captured the popular imagination as few others. Many, such as Die Fledermaus and The Merry Widow are still performed regularly throughout the world. The concert provides a splendid opportunity to hear excerpts from a wide selection of these works: from the early years of Viennese operetta in the 1870s and 80s, through the golden age of Strauss and Léhar, to the excitement of Kálmán's ungarian Hungarian

operettas, which mix traditional waltzes with wild Hungarian folk dances, Vaudeville and even Jazz influences.

A company of six singers, with piano accompaniment will perform the programme, bringing these numbers alive for a modern audience. An entertaining evening for fans of operetta and novices alike, we can promise romance, laughter and a wealth of great music.
