newLOG

Founded in 2003, The New London Opera Group (newLOG) is a not-for-profit company dedicated to producing high quality productions in London and on tour.

Based in London, the group has a very happy second home at the Louth Playgoers’ Riverhead Theatre in Lincolnshire,  where we currently produce two shows a year. A very warm relationship was formed with the theatre following the University of London Opera Group’s production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe in Louth in June 2003, and when newLOG was founded a few months later it seemed natural to make the annual visit to Louth the centre piece of the group’s year. Many highly successful summer productions in Louth have followed, including The Mikado (2004),  The Pirates of Penzance (2005, also performed at Imperial College, London) and Ruddigore (2006),  as well as annual spring concerts including an evening of Viennese operetta,  A Viennese Soirée (2005), a celebration of the lesser-known comic operas of Arthur Sullivan, A Night at the Savoy (2006), and an evening of sparkling French operetta, La Vie Parisienne (2007).

Besides the Savoy Operas of Gilbert and Sullivan, newLOG specialises in concert performances of lesser-known operatic gems. Recent London productions include a critically acclaimed  performance of Rutland Boughton’s operatic nativity drama Bethlehem (December 2005), and Michael Balfe's celebrated but long-neglected romantic opera The Bohemian Girl (December 2006), both at Holy Trinity Church, South Kensington.

We always welcome new members to join our productions. Principal roles are appointed by audition; there are no auditions for chorus. Rehearsal periods vary according to the production, but are typically eight weeks, on Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Many of our productions involve an orchestra or instrumental ensemble, so we are also delighted to hear from keen instrumentalists.
